can white western women stop bringing up female genital mutilation in conversations about how misogyny is sex based. like it doesn’t apply to you. you will never have to go through fgm or anything like it. female oppression in the US/UK is clearly different than female oppression in third world countries.

I dont see how pointing out literal sex based oppression is bad just because it doesn’t apply? Female genital mutilation is a huge topic within sex based oppression and leaving it out just because the person talking is white and western isn’t helping anyone. Plus I think it is one of the most horrific forms of sexism in the world, saying that it shouldn’t be brought up because the person talking is privileged that they never had to experience that is a good thing?
Ive never been raped, but does that mean I’m tokenizing women who have been raped when I bring it up as an example of sex based oppression? I just dont understand the reasoning behind not wanting people to talk about a major issue within feminism just because they are white.
Just because something doesn’t apply to you doesn’t mean you should be silent about it and not raise awareness for such horrific mutilation of the female body. I will never be in these girls shoes and have to experience this mental and physical pain.
Whilst fgm is predominantly an issue in non-western cultures at present (even though it occurs in western countries and can be considered a global problem), it was performed against against white western women in the United States into the 1970s and was even covered by insurance into the 1970s. There are white western women alive today who have gone through it, and even if there were not, the mutilation of female sex organs across cultures is something that should be spoken about as a consequence of sex-based oppression, which is a global problem.
Although we are subject to pressures to surgically alter our genitals to meet pornified ideals and many women describe issues with autonomy wrt surgical birth intervention, our circumstances aren’t the same as women who are at risk of fgm. That said, I don’t think white western women can’t discuss it, as long as we pause to consider the issue in circumstances other than simply when arguing with someone about it.
I don’t understand this mentality that you’re not allowed to care about something if it doesn’t happen to you personally. It’s called ‘’empathy’’ op, you might want to try it

i have friends who are at high risk of fgm and would like to learn to protect them, probably as many others here would. where i live in the uk, even in a relatively privileged area, girls get flown out under the pretence of “visiting relatives” to receive fgm. there shouldn’t need to be a separation of “my issues”/“your issues” in a diverse society, especially when some of us are equipped to help others and raise awareness.
